The property purchased was a dilapidated Grade II listed barn, originally built in the 16th century. After exhaustive consultation with the local planners and conservation officer, we designed a layout for a recently disabled young man requiring full time care, whilst still maintaining a degree of independence to help him re-learn basic life skills.
Before work started on site, it was apparent that the whole roof along with 25% of the external walls needed to be rebuilt along with other major structural issues. These were completed and the new space built inside the old shell.
Design
We wanted to create a bachelor pad type living space on the ground floor with his carer’s accommodation being located on the floor above. This affords the client a home in which to live as independently as he can, and gives him the opportunity to entertain his friends when they come to visit. He does however have a platform lift in which he can access the first floor.
One of the main issues with this project was that there is very little in the way of mains services to this property, no gas supply along with a low capacity electricity supply . So the goal to provide all heating and hot water, via renewable energy meant that air source heat pumps were utilised supplemented by a solar PV array. This arrangement keeps the running costs of the barn as low as possible.
